Minnesota is home to many  fun, beautiful, and interesting destinations.  In my next series of posts I will be presenting what I consider to be the top five winter destinations in the state.  I whittled my list down to the top five based on each locations' uniqueness, scenery, available lodging, and possible activities.  So lets begin, and drive to #5.

Literally every city in our great state of Minnesota can provide beautiful scenery and photo opportunities at one point in the year or another, but few can rival the picturesque qualities of the Red Wing area.

Situated just yards from the Mississippi River, the St. James Hotel would be my first choice of places to stay.  The photo to the right is provided by city-data.com.  This beautiful Victorian era, Italianate styled building is simply stunning and is certain to catch your eye as you drive through town.  Its massive size, vertical windows, and decorative cornice-lined roof running under triangular pediments make it a prime example of Italianate architecture.  The style takes its name as typical features of these buildings are reminiscent of classic Roman structures.  The St. James Hotel was designed by E.P. Bassford, an architect from Minneapolis.  Construction began in 1874.

Staying so close to the mighty Mississippi River, one will certainly have numerous opportunities to take frame-able photographs.  You will be in awe as the majestic bald eagle soars the sky above the water.  And during the holiday season, the streets are decorated with lights filling all with that joyous holiday spirit.

One can spend their time in Red Wing doing one or many of the numerous activities available.  Spend the day scouring antique, or any of the several other specialty shops,  on the courtyard, provided by the St. James Hotel, looking for that great find.  Take the family skiing or snowboarding.  Don't forget, of course, to search this great city for historic architecture!  And as mentioned before, roam the area and snap some photos.  The St. James Hotel even offers eagle watching packages!

Red Wing provides all that is necessary to make a vacation everything that you hope for.  The top-notch accommodations provided by the St. James Hotel and the breath taking views around the city are enough to bring anyone back for more.  The offerings of this city landed it in the #5 spot on my list of the top five winter road trip destinations.

Where will we be heading next?  Keep checking back to find out!
