In my previous article, I detailed the ins and outs of RPI and SOS, and how your opponents’ opponents can be important in the selection committee’s decision to let a team in the tournament or not. Well, it turns out the Lobos opponents have 186 opponents of their own. And I comprised a list of them, as well as how many times they are our opponents’ opponents. Obviously in-conference teams were the most common opponent of an opponent, but a few other teams stick out.
Any New Mexico fan should be cheering for Fresno State, as they are on the list 16 times over, the most of any non-MWC team. In fact, 8 of the 10 most common non-conference teams on that list are WAC teams, with the exception of Northern Colorado and Arizona. The first top-25 team on the list is Oklahoma, as they meet a Lobo opponent seven times this season. In short, it is in the Lobos’ best interests for the teams high on this list to win a high percentage of their games.
The faring of these teams is particularly important in the non-conference because during conference play, their opponent is probably high on this list too. And if you’re wondering, subdivision opponents don’t factor into RPI, a fact that Syracuse can feel good about.
