The New Mexico big men defended while the guards put points on the board for the Lobos against New Mexico State on Tuesday in Las Cruces. The 2-0 Lobos won their first road game of the season beating the Aggies 97-87.
Phillip McDonald led the team in scoring against NMSU with 27 points in 31 minutes. McDonald made a strong return after missing much of the UC Riverside with an ankle injury. McDonald shot 5-11 from three-point range, helping the Lobos make a total of 12 of their 26 three-pointers (46.2%).
Lone senior Roman Martinez scored 24 points to go along with his team-high nine rebounds. And Darington Hobson continued to be an omnipotent force, with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Lobos used their height at the forward position to make up for their lack of height at the center position. With A.J. Hardeman only getting eight minutes, the Lobos’ tallest player for much of the game was Will Brown, who ended up with seven rebounds as well. The combination of length and basketball IQ between Martinez and Hobson allowed New Mexico to eliminate the height difference.
Once again the Lobos looked phenomenal in the first half only to score fewer points than the opposition in the second. The Lobos led by 16 at the half and even trailed multiple times in the second half before winning by ten.
Jahmar Young led the Aggies with 26 points (thanks to his 16 appearances at the line). Laroche, Gibson and Rahman also scored in double figures for New Mexico State. Rahman, who was the Aggies’ high-point man against St. Mary’s, was a concern to the Lobos at 6’11, but only managed to pull down five rebounds in the contest and only made four of his ten free-throw opportunities.
The Lobos have done well from beyond the arc this year (41.6%) and will take their shooting skills back home on Friday to face Nicholls State in The Pit.
Mountain West Synopsis:
The Mountain West is 11-5 thus far with Air Force undefeated and Utah winless. Don’t get too excited though, they have each only played one game. Utah lost to Idaho and plays perhaps the WAC’s best team tonight, Utah State, at home. The other losses: Colorado State@ Oregon, TCU @ Arizona State, San Diego State @ St. Mary’s, and Wyoming vs. South Dakota State.
There are three big games in the Mountain West this evening: Utah St. @ Utah, Nevada @ UNLV, and Peru State @ Wyoming. Ok, two big games, and both are WAC vs. MWC.
Thursday gives is 2-0 Santa Clara playing at 1-1 San Diego State (Where “diaper-dandy” Kawhi     Leonard has averaged a whopping 6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4 turnovers).
Friday includes: (0-2) Nicholls State @ (2-0) New Mexico, (2-1) Colorado State @ (2-1) Indiana State, (?) Dickinson State @ (soon to be 2-0!) Air Force, and (2-0) BYU @ (2-1) Hawaii.
