Board game mania is taking hold. “Variety” reports that Sony is contemplating nothing short of world domination with a feature film adaptation of the perennial board game favorite, “Risk.” The game, which pits players against each other in a race to annex all of the territories in the world, probably looks newly commercial after the box office success of the Paramount adaptations of Hasbro's “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” toys.
"The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game," Columbia’s Doug Belgrad told the show business daily. "Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie."
Sony will produce the movie with Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook production company. Hasbro execs Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir will co-produce. If that sounds familiar, virtually the same sentence was used here only yesterday in connection with “Ouija,” another Hasbro-based board game property being produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes company.
Note: Early last year, Hasbro inked a six-year pact with Universal to produce at least four movies. The studio recently announced that Peter Berg (“Hancock”) would be directing a movie based on “Battleship,” for a summer 2011 release. It remains a little unclear what that means for “Hancock 2” and his long-simmering “Dune” remake.
