Justin Long is joining James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn in "The Conspirator," the historical drama directed by Robert Redford, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Redford won an Academy Award for Best Director for his directorial debut, “Ordinary People.”
Redford has also directed "The Milagro Beanfield War", "A River Runs Through It", "Quiz Show", "The Horse Whisperer", "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and 2007's "Lions for Lambs."
"Conspirator" tells the story of Confederate sympathizer Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the only woman to be tried as a conspirator in the Lincoln assassination, and Col. Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), who reluctantly agreed to defend her before a military tribunal.
Spoiler alert: Suratt is an actual historical figure, and the end of the story can be looked up online as well as in numerous books. However, the historical outcome of her trial will not be revealed here.

Long plays a soldier who lost a limb in the Civil War and is McAvoy's best friend and conscience.
The original screenplay is by Gergory Bernstein and James D. Solomon. The film is produced through Redford's longtime production company, Wildwood Enterprises.
The movie shoots in Georgia this month. Generous tax incentives in Georgia made it an advantageous location for Sony Pictures' "Zombieland."
The period drama is a departure for Long, better known for lighter projects. He has recently been seen in the features “Live Free or Die Hard,” as well as Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell.” Other films on his resume include “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”, “He’s Just Not That Into You”, and is the voice of Alvin in “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and the upcoming “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.”
As a director and producer Redford has always demonstrated a shrewd eye for talent, and his track record in developing the careers of young actors is not insubstantial. Timothy Huttons' career was launced with "Ordinary People", Brad Pitt's with "A River Runs Through It." "The Legend of Bagger Vance" advanced the careers of Matt Damon, Will Smith and Charlize Theron.

“The Conspirator” manages to get in front of cameras ahead of the long-announced and long-delayed Steven Spielberg Lincoln project, which would reportedly star Liam Neeson as the sixteenth President of the United States. That film is currently announced for a 2011 release, although Spielberg seems to have a very full slate in front of it.
"The Conspirator" is due to be released sometime in 2010.
