He wouldn't be boldly going where no man has gone before. Actually, he'd be the fourth. But he’s commanded the starship Enterprise, so why not the CIA? Variety is reporting that actor Chris Pine, who starred earlier this year in Paramount’s JJ Abrams-directed “Star Trek” reboot, is close to signing on the dotted line to take over the role of Tom Clancy’s character Jack Ryan.
According to the show business daily, Paramount confirmed this story late Tuesday, and in a statement, Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman said: "Tom Clancy created an unforgettable character with Jack Ryan. With Chris in this role, we've taken our first step in creating a re-boot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise."
The role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan was first played by Alec Baldwin in “The Hunt For Red October,” directed by John McTiernan, hot off “Predator” and “Die Hard,” and which co-starred Sean Connery as a Soviet sub commander. Baldwin and Paramount did not come to terms on a sequel, and Harrison Ford took over the role in “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger,” both of which were directed by Philip Noyce, director of the upcoming Angelina Jolie spy vehicle, “Salt.” Ben Affleck was the last actor to play the role, in a heavily rebooted adaptation of “Sum of All Fears,” directed by “Field of Dreams” and “Sneakers” director Phil Alden Robinson.
Capital District residents take note. "Salt" was partially filmed in downtown Albany earlier this year. Phil Alden Robinson is originally from Schenectady. Longtime WRGB viewers would notice former evening news anchor Ernie Tetrault in a cameo at the end of "Sneakers."
Although apparently a deal has not been finalized, Pine is expected to come aboard the Jack Ryan film as the project takes shape. The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept.
It is unclear whether Pine would make another “Star Trek” before the Jack Ryan film. He is currently shooting the action thriller “Unstoppable” for director Tony Scott with Denzel Washington and Rosario Dawson.
