Some of the best loved takeout cuisine is of course Chinese food. With budgets tightening and folks cocooning at home with friends and family, what could be better than a quick, easy, and very budget friendly recipe for Crab tons at home? But how can the home cook recreate that crispy wonton with the soft luscious cream cheese filling? There is a little secret, Just Herbs, Inc. an herbs and spice company nestled in Big Stone Gap Va. that delivers big on flavors and value
David and Donna Cornett created this local company over 20 years ago because Donna was told to lower her salt intake. When she started looking for salt alternatives she found the “pickings” very slim. She, with the help of her husband David, decided that more folks like her might be in the market for wholesome, organic spices and herbs and the rest is well, history. Donna explains that her spices, teas, and herbs come to her in bulk and they are then blended and packaged at the facility in Big Stone Gap Va. The fruit tea that is comprised of dried fruit and black tea is simply divine on a cold day with a bit of sugar and milk and the Blackberry tea is surprisingly refreshing when served over ice. Just Herbs, Inc is also home to the Garlic N Just Herb Pepper blend that has every spice needed to make a salt free, tasty chicken or fish dish in a snap. This will make a fantastic addition to a budget pantry.
Now the secret to those crab tons; Oriental Sauce, it is a powdered blend that includes soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame seeds, bell pepper, ginger, garlic, parsley, green onion, and chili pepper. This added to cream cheese, imitation crab meat and wonton wrappers from the produce section of the super market will produce a huge batch of crab tons for about $5.00. (See slide show at bottom of page)
Just Herbs, Inc has a very helpful website and then asks customers to email or give Donna and David a call to place an order. For value and quality this little spice company will become a budget cooks “little” secret to tasty restaurant quality meals.
Crab tons
Package of cream cheese
Small package of imitation crab meat
Package of wonton wrappers (found in the produce section of grocery)
2 to 3 green onions (depending on taste)
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Oriental Sauce (from Just Herbs, Inc)
Canola oil for frying
Allow cream cheese to soften to room temperature
Chop green onion very finely
Add as much or as little of the seasoning to your family’s taste. The soy sauce in the Oriental Sauce is enough salt for this dish.
Bring Canola oil up to a good frying temperature about 350 degrees (if you do not have a thermometer then just add a small piece of wonton wrapper to the oil and see how well it is cooking before you add a whole wonton.
Deep fry wontons a few at a time and drain on a cake rack to avoid them getting soggy. (drying on paper towels can surprisingly cause them to be soggy)
Enjoy and be warned, these are addictive!
