Time and time again as I walk around my ‘hood of Lincoln Park, I go past Old Town School of Folk Music and wish I could play an instrument well enough to validate an attempt to enter the store. Instead, I look from outside at the myriad of cool looking guitars, ukuleles and other interesting instruments. To clarify, this place is absolutely approachable—I just don’t feel confident (Read cool) enough to go in. Knowing my bumbling mannerisms the place would be in a shambles upon my leaving.
Per their website, “The Old Town School of Folk Music teaches and celebrates music and cultural expressions rooted in the traditions of diverse American and global communities.” There are a bunch of classes offered for pretty much every age level and it all looks like so much musical fun. Their initiative to bring all different types of people with such colorful backgrounds together is refreshing and noble.
After learning a little bit more on my own about this fine establishment (one of two main locations in Chicago) I think I might actually attempt to go in and poke, no literally, around a little bit.
For more information, and to see how you can get in on some folk action, check out their website or come find me pacing outside their Armitage location (Read not creepily) mustering up the courage to go in and explore!
