LA's Lisa Wilson turns passion for crafts into profits

The one good thing that’s coming out of this ridiculous economy is the renewal of the entrepreneurial spirit in America. Let’s face it, it’s true that when “the times get tough, the tough get going”. So, why not take this opportunity to turn your passion for arts and crafts info a business? That’s exactly what Lisa Wilson of San Pedro, CA did.
According to Lisa’s best friend, Lisa is “a girl who was always the most creative, eccentric and funniest person ever. Everything she touches becomes cool.” She was always the first to experiment and try the newest trends. After earning her bachelors degree in TV production and communications, Lisa started her career working in the film and television industry but she quickly found that the celebrities and others she worked with wanted to know where she got her purses, jewelry and accessories. It was then that she starting designing things for others. One weekend, she went downtown and purchased $200 worth of crystals and belt buckles. She stayed up all night creating those belt buckles. She soon realized that she wanted to have her own business and took a chance and quit her job. This is when Lisa’s Chic Boutique was born. She has managed to turn her passion for all things creative into a fabulous business. Her funky vintage purses and chic accessories are created using a combination of crystals, boas, and flowers. She uses a lot of recycled and vintage items in her creations. Her inspiration for her designs comes from her family, objects she sees like buttons, bottle-caps, old pieces of jewelry, scrabble tiles, etc. She finds inspiration in ordinary items.
Lisa has designed products for a number of celebrities including a funky crystal belt buckle for Debra Wilson from MAD TV which she wore at the "Teen Choice Awards" and she looked HOT! Her one of a kind Cigar Box Purses made from authentic wooden were gifted to Eva Longoria, Jacqueline Bisset and Sally Kirkland at the “LA Femme Film Festival”. Sandra Oh, Amy Adams, Seth Green and George Clooney love their crystal embellished pens that Lisa designed for the presenters at the Writers Guild of America awards. Recently Lisa sold one of her Tutu Bow Holders at the Rose Bowl Swap Meet (a popular monthly event in LA) to Renee Baio (aka Mrs. Scott Baio) and they started connecting through Facebook. She asked Lisa to design a one for Tori Spelling's daughter’s 1st birthday party – it will soon be featured on an upcoming episode of “Tori and Dean” on the Oxygen cable network. Product placement in gift bags at select events is a great way to create a buzz about your products.
Lisa feels the new social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin are critical to the success of today’s businesses. While she admits that running your own business and trying to juggle everything, especially with children, is tough. She has found that staying connected to potential new customers by using these sites effectively has helped her to generate more business.
Creativity, persistence, having a “never say quit” attitude, having a fearless attitude, not being afraid to make a mistake and possessing a true passion for what you do are all key to turning a hobby into a successful business. Lisa really loves what she does and it shows in every product she creates.
