Scrappers may pass by transparencies for a number of reasons, including:

  1. Too expensive
  2. Too difficult to use
  3. They seem flat and boring
  4. Don't know what kind of adhesives will work

Let's tackle these issues, which really aren't issues at all, one at a time.  (Examples of each solution, below, is provided in the slide show.)

  • The cost of a full 12x12 transparency runs approximately $3.00.  On the surface, it definitely may seem like you're not getting the biggest bang for your buck.  What needs to be considered is that, in many cases, the transparency will do a lot of the work for you, reducing the number of embellishments you might otherwise have added and [potentially] saving you money.
  • Transparencies are not difficult at all to use if it is approached by thinking beyond the idea of "a photo under the transparency."  The photo, of course, may be put on top of the sheet.  You can also cut the transparency into smaller pieces you want to use.  Or, simply cut a slit in it and tuck your photos partially underneath.
  • Layouts with transparencies don't have to be flat and boring!  Add flowers, embellishments, alphas of just about any kind, etc.  As with any layout, almost anything can be added to a page with a transparency to give it dimension and added interest.
  • Adhering transparencies is easy, too.  Brads are a fool-proof option for attaching the transparency to the page.  Whether they're in the four corners or strategically placed around the page, brads are a great option.  If you're adding embellishments (as mentioned above), this is a great opportunity to add a brad or another type of adhesive.  Most transparencies have a design or words that allow you to strategically place a glue dot or other standard adhesive.  Also consider tucking a portion of a smaller transparency (or transparent embellishment) behind a photo or another embellishment to hold it in place.

Transparencies can add a lot of visual interest to your page.  They can be found in variations from the extremely subtle to the "add a picture and call it finished" variety.  There are even more opportunities to use transparencies in unique ways -- consider Glimmer Mist or Gel Pens, for example.

Give transparencies a try -- you'll be glad you did.
