Sewing on scrapbook pages has been popular for some time now. Not all techniques withstand the test of time in this hobby. There are several factors contributing to its success.
- Most of us already have what we need to sew – a sewing machine or a needle and thread will do the trick nicely.
- It is a free-form technique, meaning that no template or pattern is required. Let your creativity and imagination be your guide.
- It can be used effectively on any style of scrapbook page. Sew on a vintage/collage page; a soft, pastel baby page, a wedding page, cards, etc.
- The tools needed for hand sewing are easily transportable, so whether you’re scrapping at home, a crop, or a friend’s house, you can use this technique on your pages.
- It will match any page with a simple change of thread.
To make the task of sewing even easier, especially for those of us who are not very proficient with a needle and thread, there are now templates and coordinating threads. For those who are just not ready to start poking holes in their pages, there are even rub-on stitches available. The most economical (and Eco-friendly) way to stitch on your pages, though, is with a fine-tip pen or marker, as shown on the card, below. (Also see slideshow.)

A few more things you’ll want to consider before you get started:
- The size of your needle – whether it’s the sewing machine or hand stitching, try to keep the size of your holes small by using a smaller needle.
- If using a sewing machine, using the needle on paper will dull it for working on cloth. Be sure to change your needle when you’re moving between the two.
- Rather than invest in the thread packaged for scrapbooking, try using regular embroidery floss. It separates easily; it doesn’t fray; it’s very cost-effective; and it comes in just about any color you could want.
