Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson Sunday issued this statement regarding the day of extreme violence Saturday in Oakland in which five people were killed including four OPD officers:
“Sergeant Dunakin, Sergeant Romans, Sergeant Sakai and Officer Hege dedicated their careers to protecting the City of Oakland and keeping Oakland families and neighborhoods safe. I am joining all Sacramentans in sending our prayers and condolences to their families and friends and our support to Mayor Ron Dellums, the Oakland Police Department and the residents of Oakland for this significant loss.”
During last year's mayoral campaign Johnson told the Sacramento News and Review that "Sacramento is the second most dangerous city in California behind only Oakland." There was a fatal shooting in Sacramento early Saturday morning which broke a 78-day string of murder-free days in Sacramento.
We need to change the climate of violence that makes the USA appear murderous and thuggish.
Other Examiners on this unspeakable horror are here and here.
Note: Officer Hege is still on life support and has been declared brain dead.
