San Francisco Muni’s attempt at Pedestrian Safety

As if a sign really matters, Rachel Gordon’s blog in The San Francisco Gate’s(SF Chronicle) City Insider section on October 10, 2009 illustrates a belief that San Francisco drivers will be paying attention to passengers disembarking from their light rail cars at various stops a long each an all given routes.
Muni (municipal railway) seems to believe these stickers that are to be placed at the back of the street cars will not only be read but “adhered to” by drivers. Enforcement of passenger safety in these situations will be “stepped up” by the San Francisco Police department.
I will believe that when I see it, when it’s obvious, just like the “stepped up enforcement” of passenger safety on the overcrowded bus lines, and the “increased enforcement efforts” of pedestrian safety at crosswalks, since some of the muni street cars have been hitting pedestrians at various stopping points in or near the crosswalks in the Sunset District of San Francisco.
Am I skeptical about this? Yes can the City do a lot more to keep riders, pedestrians, elderly, frail and the young pedestrians safer? Yes. The injuries and supporting statistics just doesn’t seem to warrant any noticeable change at this time other than fancy colored stickers at the end of each street car, nice frugal touch from our local elected officials.
