Every time I turn around I find out there are more ways that the government can take away your access to natural supplements. This time I was perusing Energy Times magazine and found an update from the Nutritional Health Alliance.
According to this update (in the January 2009 issue) Section 912, a part of the FDA's amendments Act of 2007, could restrict your access to healthy foods and supplements due to a provision that states if a natural compound is clinically investigated, its use in food and marketing of that food will then be restricted.
So what does this mean in "real" jargon? It means that it is possible for the FDA to restrict the consumers' ability to purchase any food (and therefore supplement) that has undergone or is undergoing, studies or investigation for possible health benefits. Think oat fiber....chamomile for relaxation.....vitamin C....vitamin fortified cereals...and more! In fact, this provision could even discourage the natural health industry from looking into providing scientific research for less studied botanicals and vitamins since even researching them could mean that they could possibly be HEALTHY for people! God forbid that we could possibly make a decision about what is health for ourselves!! (Please excuse my sarcasm)
While I am sure this is a "worst case scenario," it just goes to show what some entities (some might say "Big Pharma") will do in order to take complete control of what we as consumers have the ability to purchase to enhance our own well being!
To quote Wendell Phillips, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." Nothing is more true! Today more than ever we must be ever vigilant to safe guard our rights as natural consumers! Stand up for your rights to care for yourself as you see fit! If we do not do it for ourselves, no one else will!
