I often hear my clients complain of not being able to "get up and go." They have lost their giddyup! Many say they feel as if they have not slept, no matter how much they've slept. And they even fall asleep easily after a full nights rest. They don't deal with everyday stressors very easily and find themselves ill a lot.

There is some compelling research out there on fatigue that would indicate it may be from burned-out adrenals. I will share more on this throughout future posts. But what do we do??

The answer this is different for everyone. One herb that many find helpful is the schizandra berry. Schizandra (Schisandra chimensis) is a regular superstar in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Sources say that in TCM it is historically used for libido, enhancing immune function, and improving liver and respiratory function. It is present in many modern day herbal formulas as well.

The berries have a sweet-tart taste to them and make a great (sparingly) addition to your morning cereal or oatmeal. This adaptogen (a fancy word describing herbs that help people to "adapt") is available as a powder as well. The powder can be made in to a tea with hot water or added to a bit of honey to sweeten the deal.

Schizandra is a preventative product. This means that it does its best work BEFORE you get sick, not after.

Sources of schizandra include (but are not limited to):

your local health food store

www.mountainroseherbs.com

more can be found by Google-ing the herb.

Most herbal info sources say to skip the schizandra if you have an active viral or bacterial infection.

In the US the Schizandra berries is most available dried, in formulas, or as a powder.
