The Tennessee Titans defeated the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday by a score of 34-27 behind a season high four defensive turnovers, three rushing touchdowns and best of all, a collective team effort. Although it may be too late, now it seems as if Tennessee is finally playing Titan football.
Vince Young kept his poise for the second week in a row as the starter while passing for 175 yards and no interceptions on 12 of 19 attempts, although he did allow his first sack on the year. Justin Gage was the recipient of two deep throws from Young, as he led the Titans in receiving finishing the day with 97 yards on just four receptions.
Before Week Nine, the San Francisco 49ers defense hasn't allowed a 100-yard rusher all season long. Chris Johnson became the first running back to hit the century mark this year against the 49ers as he finished the day with 135 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson leads the league in rushing with 959 yards and has 1,121 all-purpose yards on the season collectively from rushing and receiving.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who took over for Shaun Hill in the second half against the Texans in Week Seven, threw for 286 yards and two scores, but couldn't escape the Titans defense. Tennessee sacked him four times and picked him off on three occasions, returning one for a score with three minutes to go in the game.
Niners running back Frank Gore gorged the Tennessee defense for 158 total yards and a score, including a 35-yard screen from Smith. Gore carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and a touchdown while catching seven passes for 75 yards. San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis, who is tied for the league lead in touchdowns with seven, caught 10 passes for 102 yards but couldn't find the end zone on the day.
While managing the offense effectively, Young took advantage of the Niners mistakes as Tennessee scored 24 points off San Francisco turnovers. After Sundays victory, VY moves to 20-11 as a starter and has now won six starts in a row. Come Sunday he will be looking for lucky number seven against the Bills in Nashville.
The Tennessee defense looks to be alive for the first time this season. After back to back wins with impressive performances, including four turnovers against the Niners, the secondary seems to be healthy again. Pro-Bowl cornerback Courtland Finnegan has interceptions in each of his games since returning from injury, including his 39-yard interception return for a touchdown to seal the victory on Sunday.
