One of the most sought-after organizations for breastfeeding support is the La Leche League International. They provide valuable information, resources, and advocate the countless reasons and benefits to breastfeed. Especially with concerns of tainted formula or the hard economic times, LLL encourages mothers who were unable to breastfeed at first not to give up because it is possible to relactate even several months after birth or by mothers who adopt if there’s determination and support.
Food security is one of the big breastfeeding issues. A huge concern is infant death from water intoxication. This can happen when prepared formula is stretched to save money and too much water is added. The World Health Organization stated that more than one million children die every year because they are not breastfed. Particularly important is the need to breastfeed during disasters and emergencies because doing so can help save lives. They estimate that no more than 40% of infants worldwide are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life.
To combat these disturbing figures, the WHO and UNICEF have come up with their Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding. Its aim is for babies to be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life and to later be continued along with the introduction of food, as long as the mother is healthy to do so.
The Le Leche League has local chapters which can help with problems or questions if you would like to breastfeed or relactate.
