Halloween is almost here, but even after it’s over you can continue the ghoulish fun at NIGHTMARE: VAMPIRES, a “unique haunted attraction that unfolds as an original horror story,” through November 7th. The show is set in the Museum Of Vampire Artifacts (MoVA), located at 623 Broadway and Houston (entrance on Mercer St.). Tickets are $30 on the website and $35 at the door. For those who love horror, it’s an inventive thrill-ride not to be missed.
NIGHTMARE is presented as a vampire museum tour that quickly descends into carnage and chaos. Visitors find themselves squeezing through black foam-like tunnels, birthed from each suffocating dark womb into a new and gore-splattered horror scenario. In each room, grotesquely-creative evil deeds play out and supernatural creatures abound: from blood drinkers, to strange and hairy creatures who claw the faces off their ‘victims’, to a foggy netherworld, perhaps meant as a purgatory for the recently demised lost souls. The impressive cast and special effects combine to effectively deliver the raucous thrill of being inside a horror movie.
The cast is big enough for every quest to get personal attention from the creepy crew of actors. Occasionally, when guests get disoriented, the actors do an excellent (and hilarious) job of remaining fully in character while guiding visitors in the right direction.
Warning: this is not for anyone who has a panic disorder or is claustrophobic. You will be touched! You will be sniffed! You will be lunged and growled at! You will be sized up ravenously by zombies, maniacs and other monstrosities as if you were a juicy, meaty snack! Reportedly, one man had a panic attack and while attempting to flee, fell and knocked himself out. Also, those with seizure disorders should avoid this one.
