Compass
                  Learn orienteering

Here's a great opportunity to learn orienteering.  Map and compass skills are a must have skill for anyone out in the wild.  A GPS can be unreliable, running out of battery at the most inopportune time, heavy cloud cover blocking the satellite.  After all, isn't that why you took to the wilderness, to leave high tech behind?  Bring the kid, if you dare.
