film still from Rose By Any Other Name

Rose By Any Other Name is a bisexual webisode series by FenceSitter films, the first of it's kind. It's a romantic comedy about a straight guy and a lesbian falling in love and their meddling friends, based on an off-off-Broadway play and a feature film by bi writer/director/actor Kyle Schickner, who stars as the straight guy romantic lead and directs. Episodes 1 & 2 were a bit disapointing: the pacing a bit too slow for comedy and the script a bit too unoriginal to really work. But I thought it deserved a second chance. Episodes 3 & 4 have snappier dialogue with faster-paced comedy timing and it's starting to sparkle. I recommend you give it a chance.

It was originally developed as a series for Logo but they backed out due to fears that lesbians would be offended by the storyline of a "lesbian" falling for a man, so Kyle & company decided not to waste the pilot but to release it in the form of weekly mini-webisodes of approx 4-6 mins each. A new episode releases every Sunday.

Similar storylines have been explored in the film Chasing Amy (where a lesbian character falls for Ben Affleck-written & directed by Kevin Smith) and the BBC series Bob & Rose, where a gay man unexpectedly falls for a straight woman (by Torchwood and Queer As Folk writer/director Russell T. Davies.) Bob & Rose was loosely based on events that had happened in real life to a friend of Russell Davies and Chasing Amy was rumored to be loosely based on a relationship that Kevin Smith had in real life with Joey Lauren Adams who plays Amy.

Many bisexual people initially identify as lesbian or gay when they first come out, until they realize that they still have feelings for the opposite sex. At which point, they often contact the bi community for support...which is why we're well aware of this phenomenon. We certainly dont believe that lesbians or gay men can be "turned straight" and none of these three productions tried to support that notion...quite the contrary, in all three the character clings to their queer identity, friends, hangout spots and spends a lot of time processing this new and surprising aspect of their identity.
