Best to go to the source, so I called one of the Philadelphia experts on this: Steve Meranus from EBE Events and Entertainment. He has volunteered to shepherd us through the huge amount of options available for music. I'm a huge fan of live music, so we're starting there. Did you know that you hear live music in a different part of your brain than recorded music? And that it has all sorts of health benefits? But not to worry, we're going to explore a lot of options in this ongoing series!

Steve reminds us: "Playing a wedding isn't playing a concert. While some of your favorite bands may be amazing, they may not be right for your wedding. A good wedding band provides not only fabulous music, but also a path through the day that highlights the bride and groom and their fabulous romance."

At a concert, it's all about the band. At your wedding ceremony, you want people to understand your transcendent love and support and celebrate your marriage. At your reception, you want your community to mingle and have a great time. Everything the band does needs to be about that.

The musicians who work with him are trained in what he calls "The Art of the Party." It's a great notion. You deserve music that makes you look fabulous and helps your community deepen their connections to you and to one another. You have a wedding ceremony and you make vows to get married. You have a reception with your friends and your family to gather support to help you stay married and to celebrate your wonderful romance. The music and musicians can help make this work for you. Not bad, eh?

There are three places you want music at your ceremony:

  • The Ceremony
  • The Cocktail Hour
  • The Reception

Here's Steve, sitting in!

Your venue, vendors, wedding planner and talent agencies like EBE Events and Entertainment will be your best bets for finding the right music and giving you good guidance on the fees. What you'll spend will depend on the area you live in, the quality of the musicians and training they have as event bands. It will also depend upon how many of your venues use the same musicians. Lots to explore!

One more way to move from "I do" to happily and healthily ever after.

(And remember, I need your help to keep this column current, sassy and useful. Write to me with Philadelphia wedding venues, products and services to explore. Put The Wedding Priestess in the subject line.)
