December 1: Use your curiosity to build your relationship. Base the holiday traditions you're wanting to start on the holiday traditions that you delighted in and despaired of in your past.

Light your candle and spend some time this evening discovering one another's holiday memories. Oh, and cuddle up on the couch. The more time you spend asking questions and listening to the answers, the better habits you're building for your future. Healthy curiosity can help marriages thrive and sizzle. (so can healthy holidays!)

  • What were your best holidays? Why? What made them great?
  • What were some of the most awkward or uncomfortable holidays? Again, why?
  • Ask one another: If you could have the perfect holiday, what would that look like (c'mon scrooge! You probably like to sled, or SOMETHING! Spending quiet time together, that's a holiday hope).

Just being curious is enough for one night. You can let your thoughts percolate over the next little while. Enjoy the candle, the comfort and the cuddling. And remember, you're not wasting time hanging out in one another's arms, you're building your future. As the song says: "Nice work if you can get it!" You got it! Curiosity and cuddling, your assignment for the evening!

One more way to move from "I do" to happily and healthily ever after.

(And remember, I need your help to keep this column current and interesting. Write to me with ideas to explore. Put The Wedding Priestess in the subject line.)
