Heathers, the 1989 dark comedy, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, may be making a comeback. I'm not talking about a sequel or the proposed musical that had been bandied about. Heathers is going to be adapted into a television series.

The original movie was about a group of popular mean girls all named Heather. After Ryder's character Veronica meets Slater's character J.D., all the Heather get murdered one by one and each one is made to look like a suicide. Heather writes about everything that happens in her diary.

It will be interesting to see how this is adapted to TV. Will it stay a dark comedy with murder a part of the show and become a series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Will they cut out the killings and just make it a series about Veronica and J.D. dealing with the Heathers (this doesn't sound nearly as good)? I can see the diary being kept in as a way to have Veronica do voiceovers during each episode.

The adaptation of Heathers is being written by Mark Rizzo. Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City) of Sony Pictures will co-produce along with Lakeshore Entertainment. According to Variety, the project is still in the script stage at Fox. There is no word yet on the casting for Heather, the TV series.
