Push written by Sapphire is the latest novel that has been transformed for a movie-going audience. The movie adaptation Precious is directed by Lee Daniels who helmed the 2001 Oscar-winning film, Monster's Ball. The film which hit select theaters across the nation this weekend tells the "hardknock life" coming-of-age story of an illiterate, overweight teen girl who is abused emotional and sexually at the hands of her parents and is given a chance to find hope when she is enrolled in an alternative school. It features some of the "who's who" of entertainment such as, comedian/actress Mo'nique (portrays Clarice "Precious" Jones' mother), pop megastar, Mariah Carey, actress, Paula Patton, show host, Sherri Sheppard, and pop/rock musician Lenny Kravitz..
Lee Daniels, a West Philadelphia native recently dished about the new film in an interview with Philly2Philly and reveals what inspired him to bring the book to life on the big screen. Mariah Carey, who released her twelfth album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel in September, ditched her normal glamourized appearance for a more earthy one in the film. In September, she discussed her role in Precious with RollingStone.com and joked about how Daniels refused to let her wear makeup for any scene.
Somebody who does makeup for me said this is a Mariah Carey nightmare. ‘You have everything that you hate going on right now,’ ” Carey said, making fun of herself. “But it was cool because a lot of people say they don’t recognize me in the film. - Mariah Carey
Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, also supported the film adaption by serving as executive producers and collaborating with Daniels, and the author, Sapphire.
