Further proof there's no such thing as a perfect match.

The ability to match people that presumably have something in common is cornerstone of any dating site; specialized sites match everything from lawyers and doctors to those looking for affairs in their married life, and the attraction to these sites carries the assumption, or perhaps the hope, that there is someone out there to match you. Theoretically, there are hundreds of people that match some aspect of your personality, or else you wouldn’t have family, friends, and acquaintances; but is there one person out there who emerges as an ideal or perfect match?

This wasn’t intended as any sort of meditation on fate or destiny as a philosophical question; rather, this is about the ability for any one dating site to match up two people that might be right for one another.

First of all, participating in a dating site in any form indicates that two people are interested in the same thing. This alone separates a group of people from the populace into a minority position of available persons seeking other available persons. Next, specialized sites bring together people who have similar careers or values, but even with a moniker that attracts people who are alike in a cursory sense, it’s still possible for one to not find what one is looking for.

Some sites go so far as to portray matching statistics based on the questions one has answered as a part of the site, and though some ludicrously high percentages emerge, I have never once seen anybody match another person perfectly. On some sites this could be attributed to differences in the way one answers questions, but attempting to excuse an imperfect match in such a way is just that; an excuse.

Even if someone simply chooses to answer one matching question differently on a dating site, that represents one way in which their personality does not match your own. It’s easy for us to think that, in a theoretical sense, it’s okay to not match on a few issues, but what if those issues happen to be ones that you feel strongly about?

In essence, searching for a perfect match on any dating site is like trying to prove the existence of god. Religion, in all of its forms, requires some form of faith that is denied by the existence of proof. Sometimes, differences so fundamental to us can be the reasons why we like certain people, and huge, seemingly impassable differences can become inconsequential; for example, Mary Matalin and James Carville have been married for 15 despite working for opposing political parties.

I won’t say that there are people who aren’t perfect for each other. Perhaps, somewhere in the existence of all couples that have ever lived on this planet, there existed one that operated with perfect harmony. Personally, that sounds pretty boring. Don’t fall victim to a narrow view of the type of person that might be right for you. If you don’t, you still might not find what you want, but you might find what you need.
