I can spend hours in a pet store.  Heck, I often do.  Aisles and aisles of cool things that go squeak and ding and make all sorts of other noises that are only supposed to appeal to a pet can make me feel like I'm at the carnival.  Magical wonderland and all that stuff.  So that begs the question.  Can a pet store be depressing?

Yep.

Recently I found myself out around Silver Spring, Maryland.  White Oak to be precise.  I needed bird food for Head, my bird, and off in the distance I spied in bright letters the words Pet Valu.  I thought to myself, "they left the "E" off?  What rebels these people must be!  Surely racks upon racks of goodness must exist within yon walls if the proprietors are bold enough to leave off the final "E!"  I made a hurried (and very illegal) U-turn, went all Bigfoot on a family of nineteen coming out of Sears and slammed into a parking space.  My shoes felt like little clouds as I approached.  I reached forth my hand, pulled open the door and immediately...fell asleep.

The walls were that shade of beige that they paint public school hallways with because it's "soothing."  There were racks upon racks of dog food, cat food and other products.  Plain, drab, grey racks that you would expect to find in the storeroom of an army base...in 1945.  There were toys too.  All neatly and orderly hung on there racks but even their colors were muted as if the toys themselves were depressed.  There was absolutely nothing that made me say, "wow!"  or " I don't even have a pet Emu but that's so cool that I need one just so I can buy it for him!"

I want to be excited when I go into a store.  I want to see something I've never seen and things that I can't live without and I just didn't find them in this store.  That's not to say that the whole experience was negative.  The gentleman working the register was genuinely personable and knowledgeable and seemed to enjoy interacting with the customers.  No matter what brand of food you use you're likely to find it there and if you need a collar they've got you covered.

It's a great place to go if you're on the run and just need to get in and out.  You can count on them to fill all your pets basic needs but overall, on the exciting scale they rate right up there with a bologna on white.
