Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, WY, was blanketed in powder after an intense snowstorm dropped over a foot of snow on Wednesday, September 30. Resort personnel recorded 14-plus inches of snow at mid mountain.

It’s a huge head start for Grand Targhee, a ski area that averages over 500 inches of snow a season. A second strong winter storm system is expected to move through the area on Saturday.

With such abundant powder, national ski magazines rate Grand Targhee among the top resorts in the West for snow quantity and quality-- less than 5% water content.

Two peaks at Grand Targhee total more than 3,000 acres of terrain. SnowCat Adventures gets 1,000 of them all to themselves on Peaked Mountain. On Fred’s Mountain, only 400 of 1,500 acres are groomed. Black diamonds take 70 percent of the terrain. But there’s something for everyone. There is a beginner's powder area and hundreds of acres of wide-open slopes for intermediates and other cruisers.

Grand Targhee Resort will open for the winter season on Friday, November 27, 2009.
