This weekend, Denver hosted the Rocky Mountain Fur Con 2009. If you are unfamiliar with Furs, they are fans who are drawn to anthropamorphic characters to the point of near-fetish.

Convention-goers said they got their first taste of furriness when they realized they had a thing for the foxy Disney Robin Hood and Inuyasha, among other human/animal hybrids (remember Cat People?). As with Star Trek, you get the erotic fanzines depicting your favorite characters nude -- however, in this case, they tend to be human-like beasts instead of Kirk and Spock depicted in the act.

Like Otherkin, some take it too far, to the point that they make it a religion, where they believe they are spiritually connected to their particular animal spirit. For the most part, it's just a very specialized aspect of SF and anime fandom.

A tradition at the con is to freak-out Denverites by marching, in costume, down 16th Street and posing in front of the World Trade Center (yes, we have one). To really get an idea of what this is like, we decided to show you a slideshow of the reactions to the parade by snapping photographs of the spectators/gawkers.

Parade of Spectators at the Rocky Mountain Fur Con
You can tell a lot more by the faces of the spectators than you can the actual parade. Furs march down 16th street in downtown Denver in their animal costumes.
