Though virtually guaranteed re-election, he was not guaranteed his party's nomination, and was facing a stiff, right-wing primary challenger over his vote for the stimulus.The GOP's shift to the right has now driven the Senate into the hands of the Democrats. It's not the first time -- the uncompromising partisanship of the Republicans drove Jim Jeffords to run as an independent, turning control over to the Democrats.
