The case of the AWOL marine, Lance Hering, gets curioser and curioser. Hering staged a hiking accident, which led to a massive search, and then went into hiding because, supposedly, he feared for his life because of something he witnessed his unit do. During that time, Hering apparently went "Hippy" and photos were found of him with his dad attending the "Burning Man" Festival in Nevada, a "annual festival that takes place in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada during the week leading up to Labor Day."
If you aren't familiar with Burning Man, Wikipedia describes it as "an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance," and that organizers have noted, "Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind." Which is all just a round-a-bout way of saying, it's and excuse for a bunch of hippies to party in the Nevada desert.
Basically, a bunch of people set up tents in a nomadic shanty town called Black Rock City and break out their Ren-fest costumes to do music, crafts, drugs and the like, then burn a giant wooden effigy and dance around the fire, feel at one with the environment, then leave behind a bunch of trash.
If that doesn't make things any clearer, then take a look at this video:
