Dharma Publishing Bookstore,  at 2211 Harold Way in Berkeley,  will have a Grand Opening this Saturday November 7th 10 to 6 PM.  Arnaud Maitland, an international lecturer, and student of Tibetan Lama Tarthang Tulku, as well as Rima Tamar and  Meggie Hayne will present  the day's offerings available to the those who find their way to their new downtown location.  It shouldn't be difficult, while the many empty storefronts, vacant buildings in the downtown area give the sense of contraction, this stoney red building lights up the street.  This Opening seems representative of the return, new life to  the Buddhist community as well as the people of Berkeley .  The closure of so many legendary new books stores like Cody's and Black Oak have diminished the light, literally and figuratively,  because going to a bookstore. losing track of time in the stacks and discovering a new interest, new focus and new experience was all part of moseying through them in Berkeley for many years.

Arnaud Maitland has been in Berkeley in 1976 after successfully running a shipping Company in New York and Hong Kong, and was moved by the environment of California during the height of the human potential movement.  His curiosity about life led him to observe that when life was difficult, there could be the development of inner resources with which to create a meaningful and gratifying life not related to external factors, like the economy or politics.  He studied with Tibetan Lama Tarthang Tulku and earned a Masters in Tibetan Buddhism and Psychology.  Maitland teaches individual and group classes and retreats as well as profit and non profit organizations. and is the author of MasterWork, working with the energy of time, and Living without Regrets .  Maitland sees traditional Tibetan knowledge as offering practical information that is mainstream to the issues and concerns of today.  A sustainable life practice or an exploration into this Tibetan knowledge from which to draw parallels to present life is the potential of human experience offered.

Dharma Publishing had a site on Vine Street in the building with the first Peets Coffee in the '70's, then moved to San Pablo and Ashby, then left for Cazadero, California at the Ratna Ling Retreat Center three years ago.  Now they have purchased a great building, well lit and spacious.  Primary to their goal was the publishing of the sacred texts from the past twenty five hundred years,  and the translation of Tibetan books.  Starting in  1989,  Dharma Publishing has published all the major text, once destroyed and almost extinct.  This January,  they will distribute 400,000 books to Tibetetan Buddhist educational institutions (about 3500 total). The Tibetan text are the basis for the seminars and teaching that they do in United States, South America and Europe.
