Sarah Pahlin's interview with Oprah was well publicized as was the fact that her book coming out this week is already a best seller. News that's not news is the category this would all be under. Having only seen sound bites over the course of Pahlin's VP campaigning, there was in the interview a gracious calm and an Oprah who went out of her way to be respectful and courteous. The questions she presented to Sarah Pahlin were front and center straight out information seeking, the answers were it seemed naive lacking depth, but with a driven optomism by Sarah Pahlin seeking belief above reason.
Katie Couric
For instance, the Katie Couric interview question in the interview that for many was a deal breaker in terms of her legitimacy as a vice presidential candidate, of what journals, magazines, books informed her views remained unanswered. And the question about the clothing and the recontextualizing that the "republican campaign" steered Sarah into was answered as-they had the clothes already for her, she hates shopping, so it was easier for her to have that handled. Men candidates do not have attention put on their clothing, she explained waving aside the question. At this point though she didn't say the word, you knew she was steering the conversation toward sexism. Sarah Pahlin also attempted to align herself with Hillary Clinton, who she expressed great affinity for because she "knew what Mrs. Clinton had to deal with firsthand."
Hillary Clinton
It seems her goal was to rile up the women who were angry when Hillary lost the nomination. She was inferring she had been the victim of different treatment than the male candidates in the Presidential campaign. However, if anyone saw Hillary Clinton on Meet the Press, Sarah Pahlin is really reaching to attempt to put herself in the same league as Hillary Clinton. The Secretary of State was entirely impressive in her presentation: knowlegeable, sophisticated, professional and at ease in the huge job she has undertaken. You couldn't help but feel that the President chose Hillary as Secretary of State and that she accepted is one of the best things we have going as a country. Drawing a comparison between herself and the Secretary of State seemed, OK, I'll say it, wacky.
Lame Duck
Sorry, Mrs. Pahlin, but your time in public office ended when, as you explained to Oprah, you decided to end your term as a"lame duck" so you could be a private citizen and make change by going to all the "battleground" states as they were called during the Republican presidential campaign. You may sell alot of books, but that might have to serve as an expression of your reward for being a private citizen seeking to make a difference.
