Voters in Georgia return to the polls on Tuesday to decide the unresolved U.S. Senate race between incumbent Sen. Saxby Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin. The runoff culminates a monthlong spurt of campaigning highlighted by vital visits from national political figures from both parties.
Statewide polls opened at 7 a.m. and early voting statistics show Chambliss with an early lead. Voter turnout at this point is lower than during the November 4 general election. Roughly four million people cast ballots last month and both sides have since tried to keep voters' attention.
Senate Democrats seek wins in both Georgia and Minnesota to gain a 60-seat majority to secure a fillibuster-proof majority.
