If you’re looking for some alternatives for donating your time or gently used clothing to benefit local women, you should check out Dress for Success Columbus.  Dress for Success is a national organization with local affiliate chapters that support themselves independently.  Recently featured in Columbus Underground, the Columbus chapter has just helped their 1000th woman.

In the Dress for Success operating model, women are provided clothing for job interviews and career counseling services that help prepare them for entering the workforce and staying employed.  The women who can utilize this service come from a variety of non-profit organizations such as women’s shelters who have women ready to enter the workforce.  In Columbus, women who are at 125% poverty level are eligible.  When a woman in the program has a job interview, she is fitted with a professional outfit and then if she lands the job she gets a week’s worth of work clothing.

You can help with the Columbus chapter of Dress for Success by donating money via money, time, and clothing.  Monetary donations made be made online using Network for Good or you may contact the local chapter for alternative options.  I read about companies that offer a dress down Friday, for example, if you donate $5 with all proceeds going to  Dress for Success.  If you are interested in volunteering your time, you can help by outfitting women as they prepare for job interviews or with career counseling.  Clothing including accessories such as handbags and jewelry may be donated on Fridays onsite between 10:00 AM and 4:00 pm at their office located on 1260 N. High Street in Columbus.  At the time of this article (October 2009), the Columbus chapter is looking primarily for jewelry and accessories rather than clothing.

On October 2, 2009, YES (Young Executives for Success) a direct affiliate philanthropic organization whose sole beneficiary is the Dress for Success program in Columbus, held their launch party at Barrio in downtown Columbus.  This is a great way for young professionals to get involved and help women in need.

If you do not live in Columbus, OH there are several other chapters in the state as well as nationwide.  The easiest thing to do is visit the national organization’s website for Dress for Success www.dressforsuccess.org and search for your local chapter using the drop down list at the middle of the right hand side panel.
