If most of your journey is on a train, can you still call it a road trip? I say yes. So, when you are tired of the open road and riding the rails sounds like an adventure, a trip on the Whitewater Valley Railroad is for you.
Each Saturday and Sunday, from May 1st through October 31st, the Whitewater Valley Railroad takes passengers from the home depot of Connersville, Indiana, along the scenic railway, to the historic Indiana town of Metamora.

Operated as a Railroad museum, the Whitewater Valley Railroad is as much a history lesson as it is a fun trip. Being pulled by historically significant diesel locomotives, each train car has been restored to allow passengers to experience train travel as it was as far back as the late 1800’s.
Your trip starts with an hour and a half ride from Connersville to Metamora. As Indiana’s only functioning canal town, Metamora itself carries a great deal of history. While there, you can learn about the horse drawn canal system that fueled the Indiana economy in the 19th century.
Besides the great history, Metamora is also known for its over 50 unique shops and eateries. Whether it is enjoying a nice lunch or shopping for a hand crafted gift, you will have plenty of choices during your two hours between arrival and when the train whistles, signaling your return trip to Connersville.

Also, during the Christmas season, the Whitewater Valley Railroad transforms into the Polar Express. Complete with hot chocolate, caroling, and even a visit from Santa himself, fans of the book and movie will live first hand a rail trip to the North Pole.
Whether you are a history buff or just someone that wants to experience the enjoyment of riding the rails, the Whitewater Valley Railroad provides a nice adventure for a weekend day trip.
