While MARTA does have its hit or miss days, there are some perks to riding as well - saving money/stress and if you ride buses, a huge additional benefit: knowing the best back roads and tricks in navigating through the city.
I am not native to Atlanta, nor did I even drive in the city for several years, but I honestly know how to get around in a car better than most and that has a lot to do with getting to see the city via the bus routes. Because it is uncommon for more than one bus route to travel on the same major street, buses often take more unique and less conjested side streets to get to major destinations. And everyone knows that hardly any roads go in a straight line here, so getting some extra help in route planning is always appreciated.
For example, bus 16 has an interesting way and relatively traffic-free way to get to Virginia-Highland from downtown. Bus 36 helps show how Morningside Drive turns into East Rock Springs and then turns into North Decatur Road, providing an option to get from Midtown to Decatur without using Ponce. Or by merely glancing at the bus routes on the MARTA system map, you can also get a feel for the major arteries and destinations in the city, especially if you are new to the area.
