Every younger generation seems to have their points to make – and every older generation has their resultant crosses to bear. Back in my day, we had protest marches, long hair, and Elvis being shown on TV only from the waist up because of his sexually suggestive dance moves. Elvis’ gyrations were tame compared to what’s happening on the dance floors in some schools today.

Since the beginning of this millennium, a phenomenon owned by today’s teenage generation known as “freak dancing” has become the latest trend on the dance floor.

Basically, freak dancing (AKA “grinding”) is a form of dance where partners grind their lower extremities against one other in a series of dance moves that simulates having sex.

And just like “The Mashed Potato” or “The Twist”, freak dances have their own moves and names like “Vibration Gyration”, “Rotational”, “Bumping Line”, and “Sandwich”.

Freak dancing may have its roots in the form of dancing like the “Lambada” popularized by Patrick Swayze’s 1987 “Dirty Dancing” movie;  but freak dancing takes dirty dancing to a whole new level.

Mimicking the sex act on middle and high school dance floors has been popular for student dancers since the year 2000, which is when school administrators across America began banning freak dancing.  The most recent school to enact anti-freak dancing policies is Downey High School in Downey, California.

Downey HS administrators were having problems with students grinding it out on the dance floor, and are now having students sign contracts.  Students agree not to dance inappropriately or else suffer the consequences.

Students attending a dance at Downey HS will be required to wear wrist bands.

With the first freak dance warning students receive, the wrist band gets snipped off.
With the second warning, the student gets ejected from the dance.

And the patrolling is done by a group at Downey HS known as the Freak Patrol.

Now, where are my dancing shoes!

And this just in!   website resource referral from reader “RH” for school administrators dealing with freak dancing and similar issues, “The School Dance Network” at  www.schooldancenetwork.com
