It's no secret that the Google/Life photo archives house some amazing, inspirational images. Recently I stumbled upon the most interesting and unexpected bunch yet: logos on the sides of old boxcars.

Set aside some time before you check it out, though. You're likely to get lost in the gorgeous typography, the even more gorgeous typography, and the overall awesomeness of classic American design.

As a side bonus, the color photos were taken by Walker Evans, a giant in American photography.

Ever since I found these I've been making an effort to notice this kind of large-scale, mobile design. As it turns out, it's (thankfully) not a lost art. There are some great pieces out there crisscrossing this country on the backs and sides of trucks. Like this, for example. Here's hoping it never goes away.
