A cat in Iowa has been diagnosed with H1N1, also known as swine flu, ABC News reports. The cat became ill after people in the home came down with flulike symptoms. This is the first documented case of the flu being passed from a human to a cat. Earlier information indicated it was unlikely that H1N1 posed any risk to cats.
The 13-year-old cat was treated with fluids and antibiotics and is expected to recover. Other details about the cat were not released in order to protect patient privacy.
To reduce the possibility of spreading H1N1 to your cat or other members of your household, wash your hands frequently and cover your coughs and sneezes. If your cat does become ill with symptoms including lethargy, sneezing or coughing, seek veterinary care.
