Would you know how to respond if your cat suffered an injury or sudden illness? USA Today reports that 41% of pet owners have had to take their pets in for an emergency vet visit, but only 20% of them have a pet first-aid kit on hand. Over half the nation's cat owners might be willing to perform CPR on their pets, but would they actually know how to do it? The good news is there are local courses available to help you learn first aid for your pet.
The American Red Cross of the National Capital Area offers a course called First Aid for Dogs and Cats. The course is offered at varying locations including Hyattsville, Fairfax, and the District. For $50, you will learn how to care for your pet if he or she becomes ill or injured. The next available class takes place on Sunday, October 25, in Hyattsville.
You can also find pet first-aid classes through Wag’N Enterprises, a Herndon company selling supplies for pet safety and emergency preparedness. Their eight-hour PetSaver class teaches everything from CPR to dental care. This course costs $105. The next class is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at Bark’N Bubbles in Herndon. Wag’N also offers a four-hour intermediate class.
Please note that all classes require advance registration and you should not bring your cat to class. You’ll just have to tell her all about it later.
