Premium Edge pet foods has announced a voluntary recall of some of their canned cat foods due to a potentially dangerous thiamine deficiency. Similarly to the Nutro recall in May, the company has determined the root cause to be their vitamin premix. Premium Edge foods are manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, who has a history of several recalls in recent years. They have withdrawn the following date codes of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball Cat: RAF0501A22X 18lb, RAFO501A2X 6lb, RAH0501A22X 18lb and RAH0501A2X 6lb.
All affected foods is presumed to be have been shipping in the Rochester, NY area but some bags may be found elsewhere in the country. Customers are being asked to return any affected food to the retailer where it was purchased. Cats suffering a thiamine deficiency will exhibit neurological symptoms. These have included; decreased appetite prior to neurological signs, vomiting, vestibular-like ataxia, dull mentation, a subtle positional ventral nystagmus, dilated pupils, decreased to absent PLR and menance, blindness, seizures, head & neck weakness with ventral flexion, postural rigidity, circling, increased respiratory rate and hypothermia.
