A dog’s love for bandanas and his owner’s relentless work started a fundraiser to help cover the high cost of the dog’s needed surgery.

Last November, Bauser, a 7-year-old black and white basset hound, suffered a spinal cord injury. It was the second traumatic event for his owner, Christine Snelgrove from Miami in a short period of time. Thirteen months earlier, Snelgrove’s mother had also suffered a spinal cord injury and had become a quadriplegic.

Snelgrove, determined to nurture her dog back to health and pay the $4,500 her veterinary clinic charged for Bauser’s spinal surgery, applied for the clinic’s Care Credit and got an approval. She would have to make regular payments, including an interest charge of 21 percent.

To raise the money step by step, Snelgrove decided to create her dog’s favorite accessories, bandanas, and sell them to pet lovers. She not only began to work on designing and producing all kinds of bandanas in custom-made sizes, taking orders by e-mail or mail, but also began to attend various family events to sell the bandanas on site.

Bauser had surgery at the end of November of last year, and the prognosis for his recovery is good. While it took him a while to learn how to walk again because of his size, he is now progressing steadily. The physical therapy his mom gives him helps his legs grow stronger and although he walks now, he is still lacking some coordination.

So far, Snelgrove’s fundraiser is paying off. By the middle of this month, she has raised $1,770 selling bandanas but still needs more than double that amount to cover Bauser’s surgery expenses. Relying on people to spread the word about her fundraiser, she counts on pet lovers to order her handmade treats for their pets and support her endeavor. In addition to pet lovers getting bandanas for their own pets to wear, bandanas also make the perfect gift to give to pet owners for any occasion. For the Fourth of July, Snelgrove has designed special bandanas which she also personalizes on request.
