Second hand smoke is known to cause
cancer in humans. But, what are its
effects on pets? (Photo: petside.com)

Addictions are a tricky business -- cigarette smoking included. But, in the end we all are accountable for our actions.

One of the consequences for people who own pets and smoke in their home is knowing that they are spreading second hand smoke in their environment.

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), also known as second hand smoke, is the cause of many serious health risks in humans, says Cori Gross, DVM. Among the risks are " heart disease, cancer, asthma and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Secondhand smoke, says Gross, has been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a known cause of cancer in humans. "It makes sense that the same toxins that endanger human lives might also threaten the health of our pets."

To learn more about the effects of second hand smoke on pets, read Dr. Gross' article.
