Technically the name “Hauer” means, woodcutter or stone mason, however it should also mean love beyond all boundaries.
Since 1978 Chuck and Penny Hauer have adopted forty-one special needs children. Between them and the five children of their own, the Hauers have shared a lot of love. This love extends to making sure that the whole family can enjoy activities together.
One of those activities is the Miracle League of San Diego. Every Saturday Penny gathers up eight of her eighteen children still living at home and two of her grandchildren and head for San Diego. It takes them over half an hour to make the twenty some odd mile trip, but Penny feels it’s worth it.
“The Miracle League is a joy to the kids,” says Penny, “They feel special doing it. We are so limited in the amount of activities we as a family can do together. The miracle league has been able to give this family an activity they all can participate in, wheelchairs and all”.
Penny showed her gratitude to Dan and Sue Engel, who founded the San Diego chapter of the Miracle League by saying, “God has given us all a purpose and you have found yours in the smiles and hugs of the players.”
So the next time you are in Del Mar and see a player in an Indian uniform, you can almost bet that it’s a Hauer under that jersey. When they smile at you with a grin as wide as Texas, you’ll know it’s Saturday and that they are on their way to play ball.
