Jake Peavy's injury is devastating news for the Padres.

You'll have to bear with me during this column. I'm afraid it sometimes won't make sense. I can hear the agonized screams of Padres fans everywhere, and it's hard to focus. It's not the torture of watching the Padres get blown out 31-7 over their first four games of interleague play this year. It's the fans gouging their eyes out so they won't have to see them play anymore.

Bill Center wrote an article for the San Diego Union-Tribune on June 12, revealing that Jake Peavy had a partial tear in his right ankle's tendon. The optimistic outlook is that Peavy will miss a month, but trainer Todd Hutcheson says it could be as much as eight to 12 weeks.

That article was a fitting prelude to the game that night in Anaheim against the Angels. When the carnage was over, the Padres were left realizing they had given one of their better offensive outputs this year, and still got slaughtered. So far, that game has been the highlight of interleague play for them.

Over the next three games, they were outscored 20-1. They finished off the three game series against the Angels with a 9-1 loss in which they allowed five home runs, three by Torii Hunter, and a 6-0 loss where they were manhandled by Jered Weaver.

Then they travelled back home to begin their series against the Mariners. Game two is going on right now. Maybe it's good news. Because yesterday was a downer. Kevin Correia was outstanding, allowing only two solo shots in eight innings. But Felix Hernandez tossed a shutout, and so Correia's performance was wasted. The final was 5-0, after a meaningless bullpen collapse, but that zero was telling. The Angels and Mariners needed only four pitchers to tame the Padres over those last three games.

Finally, in the preview to tonight's game against the Mariners, the possibility of Chris Young going on the disabled list was raised. When he got his results back, Young was in good spirits. He had learned he would not need surgery on his shoulder, and would likely miss no more than 10 days, or two starts. Although the news is much better than the surgery Young was worried about, apparently the likelihood of a DL trip has increased.

If that happens, it makes Kevin Correia the ace of the staff. And last night's game notwithstanding, it could mean the offensive woes will pale in comparison.
