Have you ever heard of Vitamin I? Chances are if you have then you are probably an endurance athlete. It is the slang term in the endurance sports world for ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) , but recent studies show that NSAIDs might not be the cure all for your aches and pains. Research has shown that the NSAIDs taken before or during exercise or competition can lead to upset stomachs, loss of blood flow to injured areas, and even impaired kidney function.
With that in mind, some new additions to the sports medicine market, topical painkillers containing ibuprofen, are fast becoming the choice of endurance athletes. The companies that market these products claim that they bring the medicine directly to the site of you problems.
Doctors still say to be careful with these products. Even though they do not directly enter the GI Tract, they can still have some of the same side effects if used before or during exercise. Just like their oral counterparts, these topical creams are best to be used after workouts or races for small pains, inflammation, or muscle soreness.
Personally I use
IB-RELIEF Pain Relief Cream. It’s a homeopathic ibuprofen cream that I picked up from
Metro Run and Walk, my local running store. After using it for a while I have found that it lessened the symptoms of inflammation in my knees. Before you try this as a remedy it’s best to check with your doctor first.
