Winter running tips: illumination
There are leaves covering the ground, the days are shorter and there’s a coolness in the air. That means that winter running is right around the corner. While most people cut down their mileage in winter, or the off season, here are some tips to keep you safe and healthy until spring arrives.
Winter running means shorter days. This means some runs are going to take place before the sun comes up or after it goes down. Not only is it going to be hard for you to see while running in the dark, it will be hard for people to see you. There are numerous ways to solve these problems.
Reflective gear is one of your main weapons in being seen on the roads at night. Most running shoes now have reflective material on them, but the more the better. There are
traditional running vests that can be worn over clothing,
hats,
jackets, and
pants with
reflective patches or reflective materials, or even reflective tape that you can put where ever you want. The more the better, you can never have enough reflective items while running at night.
Head lamps are another important addition to your running attire. Some of these lights can even be worn over a ski cap or in warmer conditions they can be mounted on your favorite running hat. Lights are important because the last thing you want to do is go head over heals tripping on a crack in the sidewalk. They also help you to be seen. There are
red tail lights that can be worn on your back because while you may have lights in the front of your body, at night you could still be almost invisible to a motorist behind you
Handheld flashlights are another option. While they can be difficult to carry, especially in addition to a hand-held water bottle, they can add a new dimension to your night vision. The headlamp is going to cast a light in the direction that you look and you can use the handheld to keep a constant beam on the ground.
Running is meant to be safe and fun. These tips to keep you illuminated at night during the winter should help to do that.
