Cleaning on a budget part two: three new uses for baking soda

You are in that cleaning aisle again! Do you not think that you could save more money by visiting the baking products aisle? Of course you can. Next product to pick up: a 99 cent box of baking soda.

Soap scum, grime and mold have one fear: baking soda. So, attack your shower next time with a baking soda paste (mixture of baking soda and water). For best results, apply a thin layer of paste on the problem areas of your shower or sink and let sit for ten to twenty minutes. Then, scrub with warm water to reveal a fresh smelling, clean surface. Cleaning aisle products cost about the same as baking soda if you get the powdered form, but you might find that this way cleans better.

Have a slow-clearing drain (not completely plugged)? Problem solved with baking soda! Pour a half to three fourths of a cup down the drain and dribble a few drops of hot water. Let sit for two or more hours, then rinse with hot water. Cleaning aisle advertises this product between four to ten dollars!

Smells like another job for the baking soda! After removing all of the groceries from your fridge, wipe down the shelves and drawer with a wet cloth. Once damp, sprinkle baking soda all over and rinse with warm water. This will not only get up the grime, but will eliminate the bad food odors. To keep the smell out, stick a slightly opened box of baking soda on the door in the fridge.

Baking soda, another one of our cheaper life savers!
