Once the sun made its way above the eastern horizon, everything began to heat up at the 2009 San Diego Triathlon Challenge, held in scenic La Jolla Cove, Sunday October 25. On this day, more than any other, the heroes of the day were the ones who overcame the greatest obstacles. On this day, the heroes crawled through the transitions, or were carried by volunteers, or stopped along the chute to attach a prosthetic limb or climb into a wheelchair. The heroes crested the top of the long stairway, which leads from the beach to the park, wearing smiles as their badge of courage. The spectators cheered and snapped photos, and it was a beautiful morning for everyone present.
The athletes participating in the triathlon included challenged athletes, professional athletes, and able bodied community participants, all completing a 70.3 distance course (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) either as part of a relay, or as an individual. Uniquely, no one was competing for a first place finish, or a course record. In fact there was no competing at all. Instead there was camaraderie and team work, cheering, encouraging, spurring in a kindly sort of way. And smiles were abundant.
If you couldn't make it that morning to see all of this for yourself, take a look at the slideshow below. But a word of warning: prepare to be inspired. If they can do it ... anyone can.
