Georgia Tech's football program historically (like many, many other programs in the nation) promotes their upcoming season by featuring their players in some type of themed setting. Last year, it was a spoof of the blockbuster movie "300" and this year it's a promotion focused around the recent "Transformers" sequel, and included the Chevy Camaro and a super-sized GMC Truck (aka Bumblebee and Ironhide, respectively).
Now, it's fair for me to say that any time I could take a picture with one of the new Camaros, I would do it in a heartbeat. That being said, I also watched the new Transformers movie and was excited about its release. Why? Most humans call her "Megan Fox." Others just drool.
The only problem with this year's idea is that, as always, it's come with harsh criticism within the UGA community. The message boards have lit up with ridicule over it saying that it reinforces their assertion that Georgia Tech is riddled with "nerds."
Personally, I'm not a fan of the idea in general. I don't think coupling the team with any particular promotion around something from Hollywood is a good idea. Georgia Tech did have a themed promotion in the years of Chan Gailey that focused around a boxing theme. I actually thought it was creative and well thought out. That being said, from a team that went 9-4 last year, do they really NEED something like this? Shouldn't the fan base be fired up anyway, figuring Georgia Tech could find itself potentially winning an ACC title?
It is my opinion, and my opinion only, that this is a bit cheesy and unnecessary on the part of the Yellow Jackets. Not only does it give UGA fans tons of visual ammo that will be the picture-jokes in cubicles around the state, it weakens the image that Georgia Tech is trying to promote, which is that they're a contender and a team worth taking seriously. Besides, anything that gives your rival ammo is never a good thing.
For example, my friend Matt H. (who is a UGA fan) sarcastically said, "Watch out for that option...it's more than meets the eye."
The prosecution rests, your honor.
